note that slapd should hardly make *any* use of your CPUs (unless for
slapindex, which only needs to be run once after changing your indices
in slapd.conf) when properly configured (bdb backend, DB_CONFIG).

if you've got 2.2 up and running I'd say it's is good enough, i.e. 2.2
can be configured to perform very well. installing the lastest release
will probably gain you nothing if not setup correctly.
but all of this is documented in the openldap FAQ and openldap admin
guide and openldap mailing list archives. nothing here is specific to
OX.
